Cupping Hardwood Floor Restoration

Your once beautiful hardwood floors don’t lay flat and smooth anymore. They've started to look wavy or warped. The edges of each board have started curving upward. Is there anything you can do about it? Can we fix your floors? Yes, we can restore cupped, buckling floors to their original luster and appeal.

The most common reason for cupping is moisture or water damage. Most hardwoods are quite porous and are quick to soak up any water. Many times the damage starts in areas like kitchens and bathrooms, but can spread farther.

We use moisture meters to determine the extent of the damage. This tells us the exact moisture content of the wood. Then we look for possible causes, or sources of the problem. Did a refrigerator leak, is there a busted pipe somewhere, is this an ongoing issue?

Once we find the extent and source of the problem, we begin correcting the issue. This process starts with removing all contents within the affected area. Then we start drying. Depending on the extent of damage, this can take anywhere from a few hours to a week or more. We place fans and air movers in and around the area. Dehumidifiers are also used throughout the area to speed up drying. In some cases we use a special vacuum drying unit from Injectidry. This decreases the time it takes to dry especially difficult areas of your floor.

After everything is dry we begin the repair and restoration of the floors. Sometimes, all that’s needed is drying to restore cupped floors. However, most times we need to sand and refinish the floors. This is the same process that was done when your floors were first installed. Hardwood floors can be sanded and refinished multiple times over the years. That’s it, now your floors are back to their former glory and sheen.
